Marie Herwald Hermann’s work is informed by the objects of the everyday. She draws meaning from the way individuals unconsciously create relationships with the domestic objects present in daily life. These relationships can be imagined or absolute, yet they settle in our mind and code for real.

Anders Herwald Ruhwald thinks of himself as a form-giver – an artist who thinks through materials using the language of form. His work functions as a counterpoint to the image-driven culture we live in. He works with materials – mostly ceramics – to make physical objects and installations that exist in real spaces.

Originally from Denmark, for the last ten years Marie Herwald Hermann and Anders Herwald Ruhwald have shared a life and a studio in Detroit, Michigan. In the fall of 2018 they will transition to living between Detroit and Chicago, where Marie will assume her new position as a full-time faculty member at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). The works on view in From the Studio: Marie Herwald Hermann & Anders Ruhwald are just that, new works from the two artists' shared studio space in Detroit, Michigan.
